Osechi Ryori

While some people munch on KFC, rather
typical, on Christmas Holidays, Japanese
family prepare the tranditional New Year’s
cuisine, “Osechi ryori.”

The word “osechi” originally referred to
o-sechi, a season or significant period,
pointing to the first three days of the
New Year. Originally, it was a taboo to
use a hearth and cook meals during
these three days, as women did not cook
in the New Year.

If you haven’t tried, then we definitely
recommend you this time around! Osechi
are easily recognizable by their special boxes
called Jubako, which resemble a VERY nice,
luxurious bento boxes.

The dishes that make up Osechi may vary
in different regions or even by the families.
And each dish have a special meaning for
celebrating the New Year. For example:

◇ Ebi: skewered prawns cooked with sake
and soysauce. It symbolizes a wish for
a long-life, suggesting long beard and
best waist.
◇ Datemaki: sweet rolled omelette mixed
with fish paste or mashed shrimp. They
symbolized a wish for many auspicious
days to “roll” in to your life.
◇ Konbu: cooked seaweed. This food is
associated with Japanese word “yorokobu”
meaning “joy”.
◇ Kuromame: sweet black soybeans.
“mame” means “health”, symbolizing a
wish for health life the coming New Year.

Sounds great, right? Just thinking about eating
them will fill you not only your stomach but
also your heart with joy and excitement for the New Year 2014!
